Gift No. 12

Finding great stuff online is what I’m grateful for today. Like these 10 easy tips on improving your life. What did we do before the World Wide Web? Without it I’d have never heard of these wonderful people:

The Pioneer Woman – Hilarious urbanite turned country girl shares recipes and stories of life on the ranch

Instapundit – Libertarian lawyer collates news and commentary from across the blogosphere

Seraphic Single  – One woman’s sharing how to stop worrying and enjoy the single life

Every one of these authors is worth a read – hop over and take a look!

Gratitude, no. 1

Since Thanksgiving I’ve been wondering what I want to do with this blog. (You’re sure to have noticed I haven’t posted since … early November.) Most blogs focus on a theme, something more narrow than a general catch-all web diary, which this one has been. Over Christmas I read the book One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp. A friend dared Ann to capture one thousand blessings, one thousand things she was thankful for, in her journal. The experience changed the way she saw thanksgiving – eucharisteo.

That’s what I’m going to be doing now with Notes from Aunt Jim. Maybe I’ll even change the name one day. But I’m going to start documenting at least one blessing, one gift, per day. From simple to profound. From a clean pair of slacks that didn’t need ironing on a day when I was rushing out the door, to … who knows where this will lead. But I do expect it to change my attitude, and so my life.

Today, my gift was being able to hear Beth Greer. She spoke and sang at our church tonight for the Ladies’ Night Out. Her passion for Jesus revitalized my flagging spirit.

Time flies….

Time flies when you’re having fun, they say.

I say it flies when you’re so busy you have to stop and ask yourself: is this Tuesday? Or Wednesday? And when you remark to someone at the work cafeteria that you can’t believe it’s noon already, that person says “I can’t believe it’s November already!”

A Baptist looks at Lent

Most Baptists (or Protestants, for that matter) don’t make a big deal out of Lent. Or “give anything up”. I remember one Catholic friend in high school told me her mom always gave up cantaloupe for Lent.  Being out of season, it wasn’t too big a sacrifice for her.

But I like the discipline; your small sacrifice forces you to reflect on all our Lord gave up for us. Once I gave up all carbonated beverages for Lent when I was in college. And that was when I had an 8 a.m. class. Early Easter morning I popped the top of a Diet Coke and toasted the resurrection of our Lord. Nobody sang out more joyfully later that day on the Alleluias, I tell you.

This year I’m going to give up pointless Web surfing. (Sometimes, of course, surfing the Web is legitimate – like looking for airfares for our family reunion later this year.)

Specifically, I will remove most sites from my weekday browsing and limit my weekday Internet usage to

  • E-mail
  • Publishing on my blog. It auto-posts to Facebook, so that takes care of that. No hanging around that site.
  • Weather.com
  • Paying bills
  • One news site

Nothing else. In fact, I think I’ll “de-subscribe” from some blogs so I won’t get their updates and be tempted to click over.

It shouldn’t be as hard to do as you might think. For the last three Sundays I’ve been doing an “Internet Sabbath.” I’ve completely unplugged on Sundays. The first one almost killed me; I had never had such an urge to go online! But it’s a wonderful way to slow down and shut down some of the stimuli. It’s so relaxing I now look forward to Sunday afternoons.

Links I Love: Get Rich Slowly

The new year is off to a great start and already people are falling off their resolutions right and left. Why? I think this writer summed it up perfectly:

If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all. That was my attitude, and it stopped me from getting back on the proverbial horse too many times to count.

That was from a post on Underachievement and the All-or-Nothing Mindset at Get Rich Slowly, a personal finance site I’ve enjoyed. Get Rich Slowly was started several years ago by one man who was determined to get himself out of debt and change his bad financial habits.  Since then he’s gotten out of debt, started investing, quit his job and does his financial blogging full-time (with a staff of assistant free-lance writers.) Not bad!

Ah, the struggles with keeping up….

When I started this blog I had (and have) so many great ideas for blogging. I kept thinking, once I graduate and finish school I’ll have time to do it all! But even without doing school I’m not posting as much as I’d like.  I’m doing all sorts of things I’ve put off – decluttering, getting re-involved in Toastmasters, plus a few other projects.

Ideally, I’ll post once a day. It will help a great deal when I finally get a smart phone (next year) and can post during the day, at lunch or right after work.

Radio silence….

Dear niece and nephews … I’ve been enjoying the time away … doing lots of fun things and all the errands that piled up. More posts coming soon, then a regular schedule of posts.

Readiness to blog

Just as the Weight Watchers book asks you to take a quiz assessing your readiness to diet, there should have been one measuring my readiness to blog. Nine days since my last post.  I’m blaming it on my classes and busy schedule. Come Aug. 15, I’ll be able to tend to this regularly. Until then, keep watching!
